THE PROBLEM OF USING INDIGENOUS LABOR TO SOLVE THE ECONOMIC CRISIS IN THE COLONY OF ANGOLA (1921-1937)

Main Article Content

Abstract

The issue of using indigenous labor to solve the economic crisis in the colony of Angola between 1921 and 1937 is the subject of analysis in this article. It is important to note that the international political and economic situation led to the ruin of the colony's economy, allowing, during the Portuguese Estado Novo period (1933–1974), the emergence of certain laws aimed at strengthening the mechanisms of control over Africans through codification based on the exploitation of indigenous labor. The aim, in fact, was to revitalize the colony's economy by stimulating free and paid labor, agricultural production, mineral exploration, and efficient monetary circulation, in order to leapfrog economic recovery.
