Abstract

This article provides a historical overview of the teaching of national languages during the colonial period, highlighting the commitment of Protestant and Catholic missions and the restrictions imposed by the colonial authorities, on the one hand; on the other hand, it highlights the efforts made by the Angolan government to introduce the teaching of national languages in educational institutions; it highlights the need for them in literature, addressing the encouragement of writing, their introduction in various literary competitions, at local and national level, as a way of attracting potential writers; it analyses their presence in the media; it also addresses the industrialization of national languages, and finally points to the need for them to be present in other areas of national life.
